We are excited to announce today that Humanitec has entered a technical alliance with DBaaS provider Aiven. The partnership will allow the standardization of 95 percent of all public cloud infrastructure into one unified developer experience layer. By pairing Aiven and Humanitec technologies, the application and database layers on any public cloud infrastructure will be compatible.
Humanitec customers have been able to deploy applications seamlessly between cloud providers, without any knowledge of the underlying infrastructure. Our technical alliance with Aiven will provide an entirely new degree of never-before-seen Developer Experience. Aiven’s managed offering for most of the relevant open source databases is available on all major public cloud providers.
For the first time in history, this alliance allows developers to migrate an application, including the entire database, from one cloud provider to another with a single click in the UI or a call through the API - all without any knowledge of the underlying systems or infrastructure. This integration gives engineers time to focus on features rather than the quirks of the underlying vendor infrastructure, which has become de facto commoditized.
“Our alliance with Humanitec is a huge stride forward for the developer experience,” says Oskari Saarenmaa, CEO of Aiven. “Not only do our offerings pair together flawlessly, but by teaming up with Humanitec, we can assure enhanced productivity for operations teams across the board.”
Benefits to our customers
This alliance introduces a new developer experience layer on top of public cloud infrastructure. This new layer makes application and database-layers 100% portable between cloud providers. It drastically simplifies both the maintenance of applications and databases, as well as daily developer workflows.
Ops teams spend significantly less time on maintaining and migrating databases between different public cloud providers. Combine this with the benefits of automating your application layer delivery using Humanitec’s technology to build Internal Developer Platforms, and you get a powerful tech combination that redefines the way both developers and Ops teams deliver new products and services.
“Developer experience drives velocity and innovation. For enterprise-developers, what tech their code runs on should be an implementation detail the Ops team takes care of,” says Kaspar von Grünberg, CEO at Humanitec. “We’ve changed the game on the application layer already, and I’m excited to extend this momentum to the database layer through this partnership.”
About the integration
Humanitec customers will be able to connect their Aiven Databases to Humanitec using Resource Drivers and Definitions. This can be done through the UI or API. Those databases can then be provisioned by the Humanitec platform whenever requested by a developer.

Aiven and Humanitec Create Technical Alliance for New Developer Experience Layer
The unified layer will simplify daily developer workflows and maintenance
HELSINKI, Finland, BERLIN, Germany — March 2nd, 2021 — Aiven, a software company that combines the best open source technologies with cloud infrastructure, today announced its technical alliance with Humanitec, the market leading provider of Internal Developer Platforms. By pairing Aiven and Humanitec technologies, the application and database layers on each public cloud platform can work in harmony.
Aiven’s service lets developers use various open source managed databases on AWS, GCP, Azure, DigitalOcean, and UpCloud minimizing vendor lock-in and standardizing the developer experience in the cloud, while Humanitec performs the equivalent for the application layer. Humanitec users build their own Internal Developer Platform (IDP), then plug into existing delivery, orchestration, and management tools like your CI Pipeline, Kubernetes Cluster, or an Aiven database service. Together, Aiven and Humanitec aim to keep overhead within operations teams as low as possible and provide developers a customized, reliable solution based on their unique needs.
“Our alliance with Humanitec is a huge stride forward for the developer cloud experience,” says Oskari Saarenmaa, CEO of Aiven. “Not only do our offerings complement one another, but by teaming up with Humanitec, we can provide enhanced productivity for development and operations teams across the board.”
Developers now have more time to focus on features, rather than the quirks of underlying data and vendor infrastructure. This alliance also breaks down the complexity of multi-cloud use cases, giving customers who desire to future-proof their business a new path to take by standardizing and automating workflows and scripts to reach seamless operations on and transition between providers. Customers will begin to see reduced maintenance overhead, smoother scripting processes, and minimal change to various APIs. By reaching this degree of standardization, developer-self service is also possible, increasing productivity for operations teams.
“Developer experience drives velocity. For enterprise-developers, what tech their code runs on should be an implementation detail the ops team takes care of,” says Kaspar von Grünberg, CEO at Humanitec. “We’ve changed the game on the app-layer already, and I’m excited to extend this momentum to the database-layer through this partnership.”
