Another issue of the Developer Productivity & Experience Newsletter! Thank you for the positive response to issue No 1 - looking forward to bringing you more industry news about Dev Productivity, K8s and related tooling.
Key-pieces
- The Developer Experience Roundtable: I recently met (virtually) with Nigel Simpson (Director of Enterprise Tooling and Strategy at a Fortune 100) and Erik Muttersbach (CTO and Co-Founder at Forto). We chatted about how both of their teams (despite differing in size) think about and optimize the developer experience. It was a great opportunity to gain super interesting insights on cultural change management. You can watch the video on our blog or on Youtube. We also recommend you to follow Nigels content on Linkedin.
- Blog-Post: 7 things in your DevOps workflow that kill your developer productivity: Currently trending on DZone and  read by over 30k people.
- Blog-Post: Every second matters: a look at why people underestimate time lost in inefficient developer workflows and setups.
Industry insights
- Still surprising amounts of buzz around Jenkins, but we register an overall downtrend when combined with Kubernetes:
Community Trend (last 3 months): **down** -> total mentions in combination with K8s globally: 757; negative sentiments: 14.7% (up 50% in quarter to quarter perspective), positive sentiments: 85.3% - Top trending articles over the last three months: Â
- Build CI/CD Multibranch Pipeline with Jenkins and Kubernetes
- An easier way to create custom jenkins containers
- Introducing the CNCF Technology Radar statement:
"Jenkins is still broadly deployed, while cloud native-first options emerge. Jenkins and its ecosystem tools (Jenkins X, Jenkins Blue Ocean) are widely evaluated and used. However, several end users stated Jenkins is primarily used for existing deployments, while new applications have migrated to other solutions. Hence end users who are choosing a new CD solution should assess Jenkins alongside tools that support modern concepts such as GitOps". - CNCF Director of ecosystem Cheryl Hung - Another well done tutorial that made it under the top 20 most mentioned is DevOps Project: CI/CD with Jenkins Ansible Docker Kubernetes.
- Project A wrote a piece on “strategies to manage Helm-Charts” that in our opinion hasn’t gotten enough prominence in the overall debate (nope, we're not associated to them). Check it out!
We’re in love with...
- Ambassador and in general the products at Datawire. These people are shipping amazing stuff. We are using the gateway at Humanitec and are super happy. For us the API-Gateway that is K8s native -> Ambassador.
- CTO Podcast by Tobias Schlottkes: Check out the interview with Daneil Gerber, CTO of Picnic.
- Loodse is now Kubermatics and open source. Solid stuff to manage your K8s clusters and worth checking out.
Some cool content from us
- Ephemeral Environments (K8s slang ephemeral namespaces) is a killer feature in K8s. Static environments (staging, dev, production) are so 2019. This article goes into detail about how you get there and how to make the most out of it. Parallelized testing that reduces the test-cycle by 90% anyone? We’ve got you.
- The difference between Continuous Integration (CI) vs. Continuous Delivery (CD) vs. Continuous Deployment (CD). It might be partially because vendors call themselves CI/CD when they are actually just doing Continuous Integration but there is still a lot of confusion in the market. This article goes into detail about the differences between CI, CD and CD.
- Best practices in Continuous Delivery. We detail how you can get the most out of Continuous Delivery. This is, in my opinion, absolutely vital to nail the developer experience.
