I hope you’re doing well and are spending a wonderful summer with your loved ones!
While you’re on the beach sipping from an artificial coconut, we’ve received the latest insights on the State of DevOps 2021. Our friends at Puppet and Team Topologies have found some super interesting nuggets. Here’s a sneak peek:
- DevOps is not automation: Highly evolved firms are far more likely to have implemented extensive and pervasive automation, but being good at automation does not make you good at DevOps.
- And DevOps is not the cloud. Almost everyone is using the cloud, but most people are using it poorly. However, highly evolved DevOps teams are using it well.
- Team identities and clear interaction paradigms matter. Enterprises are held back from evolving to the highest levels by organizational structure and dynamics.
- Cultural blockers are keeping mid-evolution firms stuck in the middle. Challenges related to culture are most acute among low-evolution organizations, but present persistent blockers among mid-evolution firms.
- Platform teams are key to success at scale. The existence of a platform team does not inherently unlock higher evolution DevOps; however, great platform teams scale-out the benefits of DevOps initiatives.
Isn’t that something? You can download the report here. Puppet’s Nigel and Humanitec’s Kaspar (me) are going to chit-chat about these things and deep-dive in this upcoming community webinar. Join us!
I will also be explaining how to nail self-service on Kubernetes (hint: introducing helm charts isn’t quite enough). Stefan from Achievers will be talking about developer experience on GitOps.
Talk soon,
Kaspar
